Canal Capers

The previous two weeks we have been on our canal boat along the Grand Union Canal. We had cold weather, even snow but we were able to warm up once we were inside.
We woke up to snow. We were lucky to be able to get water as many of the water supply taps were frozen
As you travel there are a variety of craft different shapes and sizes and conditions.
This boat is very jolly

Traditional boats
A trip too far

We did 100 miles and 66 locks. Some of the lock gates are very hard to move.
Some gates have double paddles
We went over a aqueduct. There was a big drop on one side with no barrier.
   It is a strange feeling

There are a variety of tunnels.
The entrance to Branston tunnel.

This tunnel was designed for horses

We explored the local villages.

Quaint houses
Lovely ironstone building

Oh deer

We saw several metal sculptures on our travels.
A horse of course

So much movement

A very strange man on the canal bank.

I love this graffiti.

Out and About

I have been away for the past few weeks and these are some of the places I have visited.

The Falkirk Wheel is a canal boat hoist that lifts the narrowboat from ground level. I was lucky to see it operating.
You can see the different levels. The ''bottle opener' head rotates to move the boat

The narrowboat on the higher level

There are two small Kelpies at the Falkirk Wheel.
Slightly horse

The azaleas are vibrant in their vivid hues.
Zing

Acid yellow gorse cover the hillsides and verges.
It smells of coconut

The horse chestnut is coming into bloom.
Horse chestnut candles are just beginning to form

Little Salkeld Watermill in Cumbria is like stepping back in time.
Powerful pink

Old buildings

Former animal pens

Flour is still ground using the waterwheel

A primrose and a snail.
Beauty and the beast

I visited the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. An amazing building.
The offices

The debating chamber

I love the pattern of the seating, like speech marks

White honesty and cow parsley dance in the hedgerows.
White froth

Graffiti.
